A Broken Friendship

In friendship unbroken The happy months passed, With never a token That 'twas not to last. For as time should lengthen From months into years The trust should but strengthen Secure from all fears. Alas for such dreaming! It took but a day This friendship fair seeming, To bring to decay. It sudden destroyal 'Twas wrought by a breath! Can no two be loyal In friendship till death? Ah well! it is over --- Begun but to end; But no gain will cover The loss of a friend.
